You can convert your garage to a family room, regardless of whether you are a busy parent and/or just need more space for relaxation. Your garage can be converted into almost any type of living space as long as you adhere to local building codes.

The cost of converting a garage into a family room is affected by several factors. These factors include the dimensions and number of rooms you desire to add, as also the quality of the insulation and wall finish.

1. Wall Insulation and Finish

Garage walls are not often insulated or finished so it is likely that they will need to be insulate before being converted into living spaces.

2. Windows

Windows are essential for natural light and views to the garden when you convert a garage into an family room. You can use the same style of windows as you would in the rest of your home, but consider adding frosted glass or tinted glass to reduce glare from outside sources.

3. Ceilings and beams

If your garage is in an area with harsh winters, you may want to install a faux-beam ceiling to make the room more comfortable during the colder months. The beams and the trusses create a cozy and rustic look to the ceiling and also tie the space together visually.

4. Home Office

If you work from home, a garage can be a great place for a home office. You can use it for many purposes, especially if there is a large window.

5. Playroom

A garage could be the perfect space for your children if they are growing up fast. You can add a climbing wall, reading nooks, and homework stations to give them an extra room to enjoy their spare time.

6. Home Cinema

If you want to get serious about movie-watching, a home cinema can be a great addition to your garage. If the room is south-facing you will want to make sure that you plan ahead and buy good blackout blinds.

7. Home Bar

If the garage is off of the kitchen or detached from the house, a home bar is an ideal way to transform the space into a family room. You can purchase a kit with the bar, cabinets and seating or have it made to your specifications and budget.

8. Guest Bedroom

Converting your garage into a guest bedroom is a great option for smaller houses that have one or more bedrooms on the ground floor. However, you'll want to make sure the new room is practical -- especially if there isn't access to a toilet or shower in the existing bathroom.

FAQ

Why should I remodel rather than buying a completely new house?

While it's true that houses get less expensive each year you still need to pay the same price for the same square footage. You may get more bang for your buck but you still have to pay for extra square footage.

It's cheaper to maintain a house without much maintenance.

Remodeling can save you thousands over buying a new house.

You can transform your existing home to create a space that suits you and your family's lifestyle. Your home can be made more comfortable for your family.

How much does it cost for a shower to be tiled?

You might want to go big if you are going to do it yourself. A complete bathroom remodel is an investment. However, quality fixtures and materials are worth the long-term investment when you consider how beautiful a space will be for many years.

The right tiles will make a big difference in the way your room feels and looks. Here's how to choose the right tiles for your home, regardless of whether it's a small renovation or major project.

First, you need to choose which flooring material you want. Common choices include ceramics and porcelain as well as stone and natural wooden. Next, choose a style such as a classic subway tile or a geometric pattern. Select a color palette.

You'll probably want to match the tile to the rest of the room for a large bathroom remodeling job. You might choose white subway tiles in the bathroom and kitchen, but use darker colors in other rooms.

Next, determine the size of the project. Is it time to update a small powder room? Would you prefer to add a walk in closet to your master bedroom?

After you have determined the scope of work, visit local shops to see samples. By doing this, you will get an idea of the product's installation methods.

Finally, shop online for great deals on ceramic and porcelain tiles. Many retailers offer free shipping or discounts on bulk orders.

Are you able to spend $30000 on a kitchen renovation?

Depending on your budget, a kitchen renovation could cost you anywhere from $15000 to $35000. You can expect to spend more than $20,000. If you are looking for a complete overhaul of your kitchen, it will cost more. You can get a complete kitchen overhaul for as little as $3000 if you just want to replace the countertops or update your appliances.

Full-scale renovations typically cost between $12,000 and $25,000. There are many ways to save money and not compromise on quality. An example is to install a new sink rather than replacing an existing one that costs around $1000. You can even buy used appliances for half of the price of new.

Kitchen renovations take more time than other types. So plan accordingly. It doesn't make sense to start work on your kitchen when you realize half way through that time is running out.

It is best to start early. Start by looking at different options and getting quotes from contractors. You can then narrow your choices by price, availability, and quality.

Once you have contacted a few contractors, ask them for estimates and then compare prices. Not always the best choice is the lowest-priced bid. It is important that you find someone with comparable work experience to provide an estimate.

Add all costs to the final cost. These may include additional labor, material charges, permits, etc. Be realistic about what you can afford and stick to your budget.

You can be open about your dissatisfaction with any of these bids. You can tell the contractor why the first quote isn't what you want and get another one. Don't let pride stand in the way of saving money.

What order should you renovate an existing house?

First, the roof. The plumbing follows. Third, the electrical wiring. Fourth, walls. Fifth, the floors. Sixth, windows. Seventh, the door. Eighth, it's the kitchen. Ninth are the bathrooms. Tenth: The garage.

Once you've completed these steps, you can finally get to the attic.

If you don't know how to renovate your own house, you might hire somebody who does. Renovations take time, patience, and effort. And it will take money too. Don't be discouraged if you don’t feel up to the task.

Renovations aren’t always inexpensive, but they can make your life easier and save you money in the long term. Plus, having a beautiful home makes life better.

What is included in a full-scale kitchen remodel?

A complete kitchen renovation involves more than simply replacing the sink and faucet. There are also cabinets, countertops, appliances, lighting fixtures, flooring, plumbing fixtures, and much more.

Full kitchen remodels allow homeowners to modernize their kitchens without the need for major construction. This means that no demolition is required, making the project easier for both the homeowner and the contractor.

Many services are required for kitchen renovations, such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC. Depending on how extensive your kitchen renovation is, you may need multiple contractors.

It is best to work with professionals who have experience in kitchen remodeling. Small issues can lead to delays when there are many moving parts involved in a kitchen remodel. DIY is a good option, but make sure to plan ahead and have a back-up plan in case something goes wrong.

How long does it usually take to remodel your bathroom?

Two weeks typically is required to remodel a bathroom. The size of your project will affect the time taken to remodel a bathroom. A few small jobs, like installing a vanity or adding a bathroom stall, can be done in one day. Larger jobs, like removing walls, installing tile floors and fitting plumbing fixtures, may take several days.

It is a good rule to allow for three days per room. You would need 12 days to complete four bathrooms.
